Trauma Therapy for First Responders & Veterans

As a first responder, member of the Australian Defence Force (ADF), or Veteran, we understand that you may have experienced confronting, distressing and potentially life- threatening situations.

For some, this can significantly affect one's physical, mental, emotional, and social well- being and can result in burnout, depression, anxiety, and PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder).

We also understand that organisational aspects such as work hours or load, fatigue and limited social interaction outside of work, can impact your wellbeing.

We know that every person's experience is unique, and we are dedicated to providing comprehensive support and strategies to help overcome your mental health concerns.

Our team is experienced in first responder culture, the ADF, and the operational and organisational challenges that may arise from working in this field.

Psychological therapy can help you recover from the cumulative effect of repeated exposure to critical incident or workplace stress in your role as a first responder.

Couples Therapy

At Attune Psychology Services, we also specialise in couples therapy.

Issues and conflicts often emerge when resolutions are unattainable or communication breaks down. This can be due to emotional distance, infidelity, daily stressors, or simply feeling that your relationship has reached a standstill.

Couples counselling offers you and your partner a chance to rebuild your relationship and create a closer, more fulfilling future together.

We use the Gottman Method Couples Therapy – a highly effective, goal-orientated approach built on nearly 40 years of research and clinical practice from the Gottman Institute. This therapy uses specific interventions and exercises to help you and your partner overcome obstacles and enhance understanding, connection, and intimacy within your relationship.

Gottman Method Couples Therapy was developed to help you and your partner to:
● Increase respect, affection and closeness
● Break through and resolve conflict when you feel stuck
● Generate greater understanding
● Keep conflict discussions calm and respectful

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) aims to help individuals recover from traumatic experiences and distressing memories. It has shown promising results in treating conditions like post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), complex PTSD, anxiety, and depression.

EMDR involves recalling traumatic events while the therapist guides eye movements. These eye movements help the brain process the memories more healthily, reducing their emotional intensity. The goal is to desensitise and reprocess the memories, so they no longer cause distress. It’s like giving the brain a software update to handle past traumas more effectively.

Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)

Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) is a specialised form of cognitive behavioural therapy that effectively reduces PTSD symptoms caused by various traumatic events, such as child abuse, rape, combat, and natural disasters.

CPT is typically delivered over 12 sessions and helps individuals learn to challenge and modify unhelpful beliefs related to the trauma. This process aids in creating a new understanding and perspective on the traumatic event, and in doing so reduces its ongoing negative effects on their current life.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a helpful approach to improve an individuals' mental well-being. It focuses on accepting thoughts and feelings instead of fighting or avoiding them.

By practising mindfulness, individuals learn to observe their thoughts and emotions without judgment. This enables them to make choices aligned with their values and take actions that bring them closer to their goals.

ACT helps build psychological flexibility, allowing individuals to embrace uncomfortable emotions while continuing to move forward in meaningful ways. With the support of a trained therapist, ACT can empower individuals to live a more fulfilling and authentic life.

Applied Neuropsychotherapy

Neuropsychotherapy explores the relationship between the mind, brain, body, environment, social interaction, and well-being.

Neuropsychotherapy proposes that the best way to improve brain health is to ensure that a person’s fundamental needs, embedded within brain structures, are fully satisfied.

Instead of targeting the brain directly, neuropsychotherapy focuses on understanding how life experiences are interpreted by the brain.
In other words, it helps individuals make sense of their experiences and reframe how they view them.

Mindfulness-Based Therapy

Mindfulness-based therapies use meditation, relaxation, and awareness exercises to help individuals focus on the present moment. The goal is to experience day-to-day situations and stressors in a non-judgmental and non-reactive way.

These therapies can enhance an individuals' ability to cope with stress, anxiety, and everyday challenges, allowing them to be fully present and engaged in the current moment.

Over time, practising mindfulness can lead to long-term improvements in mood, happiness, and overall well-being.
